During the summer months there is nothing quite like spending an evening on the patio.

However, even during the warmer months of the year the nights can become rather chilly.

In fact, one of the main constraints to spending time in the garden is those chilly evenings.

This can be rather frustrating especially is it is a warm and sunny spring day! After months of long winter darkness and months cooped up inside all we want is to just get outside!

One of the best ways we can do this is with a garden heater! These can actually help you get the most outside your garden space.

Garden heaters enable you to extend the gardens seasonal usage boosting temperatures in the early evening.

This means more quality time with family and friends and generally enjoying the outside. There are so many effective garden heaters on the market today.

It can actually be quite surprising just how much they can warm up a space. This is especially so if you have a sheltered spot or design for a microclimate.

Hence with garden heaters in mind we have found 10 of our favourite models on the market.

Don’t suffer the chill and sacrifice time outside this season! Start looking for some effective garden heaters today!

Gas Vs. Electric Garden Heaters: Which is Better?

Backyard heaters need a source of power in order to provide heat to your garden.

You can choose between gas and electric heaters when looking for the perfect source of warmth for your patio.

Both types of heaters have their advantages and disadvantages to consider.  We have set out some of these below so you can make an informed choice.

Gas Garden Heaters

Gas heaters can be powered by propane or pure natural gas, which is easy to obtain at any hardware store. Some of the pros and cons of gas heaters include:

Pros:
  • Better aesthetic designs Stronger heat output than electric heaters
  • Stronger heat output than electric heaters

Cons:
  • Sometimes requires professional installation
  • Needs to be properly vented to prevent combustion

Electric Heaters

You might find electric garden heaters more convenient and useful if you have a smaller garden space.

Many people are weary when it comes to gas bottles and naked flames. Hence electric heaters could be better for you, let’s look at some pros and cons:

Pros:
  • Easy to plug in and turn on
  • Safer than gas and less prone to overheating

Cons:
  • Can only be placed near an electrical outlet
  • It takes a while to fully heat up the space

Both types of garden heaters have their benefits and drawbacks depending on what you are looking to get out of an outside space.

What outdoor heaters put out the most heat?

Generally propane and gas heaters can put out the most heat and have adjustable knobs to turn up the burn frequency.

Gas heaters produce more heat than electric heaters but do not underestimate external factors such as microclimate, heat absorption and radiation.

For example clay log burner heaters can gradually heat up the thermal mass of the subject. This leads to an extended and prolonged heating effect which can out heat a gas heaters output alone.

Garden microclimate

Any heater which is positioned correctly in an enclosed courtyard can be more effective than a more powerful patio heater.

Furthermore stone and masonry walls slowly heat up and release heat slowly. This can greatly improve the effectiveness of any garden heater.

Therefore it is important to recognise no matter what patio heater you use its the strategic positioning which counts.

Enclosed patios, stone materials and wind screens will all make outdoor heaters work more effectively.

Do patio heaters keep you warm?

Yes patio heaters keep you warm by burning some sort of fuel to create heat.

Garden heaters are designed to use this heat to gradually heat up a thermal mass and radiate heat outward. This heats up air particles which can then cause localised convection currents.

This is why it is very beneficial to minimise outside draughts and air disturbance. This can be done by creating, sheltered, outside environments like walled gardens.

Most garden patio heaters have metal hats which help to radiate heat downwards towards seating areas.

Do Patio heaters work below freezing in winter?

Most patio heaters will work in freezing or cold winter weather but they are less effective than in summer.

Different people have different temperature tolerances but patio heaters will warm winter gardens as long as there is not much wind.

Once again utilising a garden patio heater in conjunction with good garden design and microclimate will reap the best results.

Winter weather will not damage or degrade outdoor heaters as long as they are well covered when not in use.

Are outdoor heaters safe?

With outdoor heaters high temperature output it is reasonable to wonder if they are safe.

All hot appliances must be treated with respect and common sense but are not dangerous. Most outdoor heaters hot parts are covered by safety grills and have the hottest parts out of reach.

All garden heaters have a low centre of gravity with a sturdy and solid base to avoid toppling over.

Even so it is always advised to position garden, patio heaters in a position which is not subject to pedestrian circulation.

It is also recommended to also keep flammable materials away from the heated parts. With common sense and little planning outdoor heaters are very safe to use.

Get the most out of a backyard heater

If you want a seasonal, outside experience there are ways to enhance the effeteness of your garden heater.

Many restaurants and bars today extend their useable space with patio heaters. This can also be achieved in any garden or outside space with microclimate.

Microclimate is the creation of outside, sheltered environments which retain heat better than the regional locality.

Landscaping features such pergolas, screens or dense planting can allow warm air to pool in a specific area.

Patio heaters are more effective in microclimates and make garden heaters more cost effective and better for the environment.

The best garden areas to heat are stone patios next to a sunny building. However any outside spaces thermal retention can be enhanced with good landscape design and temporary installations.

Try to think about how landscaping installations can help you get the best out of your backyard.

It is interesting that this post underlined that when looking to have an outdoor heater installed, it is important for us to consider the type of heater that we need. I was never aware that ther is solar powered heaters. I think I will definitely look at solar powered heaters since it is more cost efficient.

I never knew that you could use outdoor heaters to give your garden a warm feeling of freedom during cold weather. My aunt wants to invite her friends for a party since she's about to reach 50 this year. Maybe she should try renting an electric heater because of its portability before asking her guests to visit.
